Coffee Coloured Children
Coffee Coloured Children attempts to approach a social statement through an experimental framework. Two black children are brought up by a white mother in an urban housing estate. Their situation is made difficult by them being the only black children in the neighbourhood. Here the film concentrates on their desire to rid themselves of their black image in order to conform with their surroundings. Grainy images show them drenched with household cleansers, trying to scrub themselves white in the bathroom. The emphasis sifts from self hatred as children, to catharsis and anger as young adults, an attempt to expunge the 'distorted dreams of their past'.
