BRAN NUE DAE
Tom Zubrycki's new film (following Friends and Enemies, Kemira etc.) follows performances of Broome's Aboriginal musical Bran Nue Dae, from rehearsal and development to the rapturous reviews and its enthusiastic reception throughout Australia. The play has yet to open in Melbourne, where it is scheduled for later this year, before touring the UK and Europe. This year Bran Nue Dae won Australia's most prestigious art prize, the Sydney Myer Award for outstanding acheivement in the performing arts. The exuberance and vitality of the show itself is matched in the film by the ingenuity and courage of the show's creator, Jimmy Chi. Bran Nue Dae was developed by Jimmy Chi, based on his own life and the pooled experience of friends and collaborators from the Broome band 'Kuckles". The musical is the story of an Aboriginal boy's flight from the city of Perth to his homeland at Lombadina, treated with combinations of rock opera, comedy, romance and song. (JH)
