Among the Hardwoods
1933
/ Australia
Undoubtedly, and deservedly the most acclaimed of all the Cinema Branch films. An idyllic report on timber gathering in WA. The Cinema Branch had made silent films on the same subject. This is a sound production, though it is used very sparingly.
If one is to believe the production reports of the time, cutting down trees by hand, particularly in WA and the Hawkesbury is one of the major preoccupations of the Australian male. In production terms it comes second only to the compulsion to make films on developing the North in the 50s and 60s.
