Bomgay

Director Riyad Wadia / 1997 / India

India, the land of the Kama Sutra, has been surprisingly rigid in its attitudes towards sexual practices, and this of course includes homosexuality. Given that, this video production is quite frank and brave with its attitudes towards being gay in Bombay.

Six poems, presented as vignettes, give voice to the impressions, feelings and practicalities that go with being Indian and gay. Blurred images, tantalising glimpses and familiar scenarios give Bomgay a universality that makes it less about India, and more about the nature of male homosexuality worldwide.
