Peaches

Director Charmaine Choo / 1997 / UK

This fluent and visually seductive animation belongs to a genre in which puppets, manikins and dolls stand as heavily loaded metaphors for women. Peaches is a creature, Charmaine Choo says, "entangled by the desires of others." Shot using wax and wood actors and using many of the conventions of narrative film, it depends on its artificiality for its emotive power, particularly in the several unsettling scenes of bodily mutilation.
