IDLE RUNNING

Director Janez Burger / 1999 / Slovenia

The recipient of 15 International film awards, Idle Running is a comic drama about Dizzy, a veteran student stranded halfway to adulthood. Watching TV, snoozing and boozing form Dizzy's routine—even laziness is beginning to bore him. His cycle of slothfulness is abruptly shattered when a new roommate, Marko, arrives, with his pregnant girlfriend in tow. Marko's tidiness and almost constant studying add fuel to this Odd Couple predicament. Further compounding Dizzy's worries are the unwanted advances of a fellow student, Evica. Dizzy must learn to conquer the fear of living and open up to other people. Like Love and Other Catastrophes and Clerks before it, Idle Running is the debut work of a major new talent, a young filmmaker to watch. Overcoming the limitations of its low budget, the film revels in its originality and resourcefulness. Both richly comic and bittersweet, the cast members give honest performances as they explore the intricate terrain of human psychology. Comical and down-to-earth, Idle Running's road to self-discovery is an engaging treat.
