ORIENTATIONS CHRIS DOYLE: STIRRED NOT SHAKEN

Director Rick Farquharson / 2000 / Australia

Chris Doyle is an Australian expatriate cinematographer who left Australia in the 1970s and has been based in Hong Kong for the last 20 years. He is best known for his cinematography in Wong Kar-Wai's urban tales, Chungking Express, Happy Together, Fallen Angels and most recently In The Mood For Love, for which he won a Special Technical Grand Prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Doyle also speaks fluent Mandarin, has a Chinese name, and has declared himself Chinese with a skin disease. This unique talent is a self taught cinematographer who is also a practicing artist in his own right, having produced a book, exhibitions and made his own film. Orientations... documents Doyle's unconventional approach to cinematography and depicts a life similarly unconstrained by conventions: possessing seemingly boundless energy, he lives a surreal existence where time has little meaning and food "gets in the way of drinking". A stylish portrayal of a unique Australian who has forged his own way in the wider cinematic world.
