ONE NIGHT THE MOON

Director Rachel Perkins / 2001 / Australia

In 1932 a child went missing in outback NSW. Entranced by a beaming full moon, the little girl left her bed and wandered into the night, vanishing mysteriously. This musical drama features sublime music and performances by Paul Kelly and Kaarm Fairfax together with an extraordinary supporting cast including Kelton Pell (last seen in AFI Best Short award-winner Confessions Of A Headhunter). veteran Chris Haywood, David Field (Ghosts Of The Civil Dead) and acclaimed musician Ruby Hunter. Celebrated singer/songwriter Kev Carmody also , contributes additional music to the film.

Kelly plays the racist father of the lost child who refuses crucial help with the search by not allowing an Aboriginal to set foot on his land. With time wasting and no sign of her daughter, the girl's distraught mother seeks assistance from the only man who may offer hope. One Night The Moon is based on the true story of Aboriginal tracker Riley, a man awarded the King's Medal for his services to the police force.

Rachel Perkins (Radiance, MIFF 1998) has captured both the desolation of a harsh and unforgiving environment as well as the desperation of the parents in this beautifully photographed featurette. First class Australian cinema.
