PAINTING COUNTRY

Director Sally Ingleton / 2000 / Australia

Painting Country follows a journey by ten of Australia's most famous indigenous artists, from their community of Balgo in remote North West Australia back to their traditional country. The Balgo artists' paintings, which hang in galleries and private collections around the world, are not of the land around Balgo, to where they fled seeking sanctuary, but are like maps of the ancestral lands from which most were forced by white settlement. The film follows the journey of Balgo's most celebrated artists across lands that they have painted from memory for virtually their whole lives. As they travel through some of Australia's most spectacular and remote terrain, we learn much about the inter-reiatedness of their memories, beliefs and paintings. An intimate portrayal ol the life and humour of the artists, and a testament to their astounding knowledge of the land to which they belong, Painting Country is a powerful and thought-provoking work-a visual feast.
