COOL AND CRAZY

Heftig og Begeistret

Director Knut Erik Jensen / 2001 / Norway

Facing the ferocious Barent Sea—with a practically uninterrupted view of the North Pole—lies the small fishing village of Berlevag, made famous by the Oscar-winning film Babette's Feast (1987). Berlevag is again making a bid for international recognition, this time with the aid of a thirty-strong, exotic and eccentric, male choir.

Award-winning director Knut Jensen presents us with a subject he clearly knows and loves, a polar' version of the Buena Vista Social Club. Jensen documents the choir's activities with the kind of irreverence and wit that only an insider could allow themselves, all the while, communicating the warmth and indomitable spirit of the participants.

For some this film will be about men and the concentration of egos and competitive spirit which that entails. For others it will be about emotion, love, politics... or even fish! Above all it is about the dignity of ordinary lives lived under extreme circumstances. Sublime music and awesome entertainment, Cool And Crazy is a true Festival discovery.
