RAY BANG
Part screwball comedy, part social commentary, Ray Bang is both a great deal of fun and a warm meditation on the hopes and dreams of a trio of deadbeat cab drivers. Hak-Rak contends with a wife nagging him to work longer and harder. Joon-Hyung, a balding former accountant, salts away his taxi earnings with miserly efficiency. Hae-Gon, the brains of the outfit, is an unlikely lothario; a paunchy, beer guzzling slob he seems able to seduce any woman that steps into his cab, except the girl of his dreams.
This motley crew begin to fixate on Vietnam as a destination that will see the fruition of all their grand scams. They hatch a hare-brained scheme to rob the home of 'The Seagull of Pusan', a much reviled fortuneteller rumoured to stash a fortune in her mattress. A delightfully goofy portrait of friends toughing out lean times and attempting to leave their mark; even if it's only a skidmark.
Jang Hyun-Soo was amongst the first graduates of the Korean Film Academy. This is his fifth feature, other projects include: Walking All the Way to Heaven (1992), Born to Kill (1996) and Scent of a Man (1998).
