TEENAGE HOOKER BECAME KILLING MACHINE IN DAEHAKROH

Director Nam Ki-woong / 2000 / South Korea

A deliriously inventive, over the top and challenging film from youthful Korean cinema mavericks, Indiestory (see also Looking for Bruce Lee and shorts in this year's programme).

"Of all the gob-smacking developments in Korean cinema in recent years, the arrival of this deranged feature must be the most alarming. A uniformed schoolgirl prostituting herself for pocket money on the streets of a Seoul suburb inadvertently runs afoul of her teacher. This monstrous ogre buys her services, gets her pregnant then kills her and the unborn child. He brings in three gibbering 'brothers' to cut up the body. A mysterious onlooker takes away the pieces and reconstructs the girl as a cyborg - an unstoppable killing machine. A desire for revenge soon asserts itself in the now-mechanical brain... cute dance sequence too!" - Tony Rayns, Vancouver Film Festival

Nam Ki-woong began his career in stage production working with the People's Theatre Company. His short films have screened at London, Vancouver, Rotterdam and Seattle Film Festivals, among many others.
