TAKE CARE OF MY CAT

Goyangirul butakhae

Director Jeong Jae-Eun / 2001 / South Korea

A charming and heartfelt look at the secret lives of young women in a rapidly changing South Korea. Good looking Hae-joo dreams of becoming a successful career woman; talented outsider Ji-young yearns to study art abroad; meanwhile, rebellious Tae-hee submits to a romance that no one understands.

This debut feature from Jeong Jae-Eun - already making her mark with a string of successful short films - is refreshingly absent of sentiment and syrupy moralising. Shot with visual inventiveness in the frantic Korean port of Inchon, the film's real strength lies in five finely etched character studies of young women on the cusp of their own self discoveries.

"We wanted to tell a story that nobody has talked about, yet with which many people would empathise. There have been many films observing women but few have penetrated into their minds or breathed in their worlds." - Jeong Jae-Eun

Jeong Jae-Eun (born in Seoul, Korea in 1969) studied at the Korean National University of Arts School of Film and Multimedia. Take Care of My Cat is her feature film debut after eight short films, including Yujin's Secret Codes, winner of the Grand Prize at the 1999 Women's Film Festival in Seoul.
