I LOVE MY MOVIE

Director Hilary Weisman / 1998 / USA

Hilary Weisman's comedy road docudrama has probably created its own genre. Ostensibly the true account of four gals on a cross-country trip to sell stolen video equipment on the Mexican black market, / Love My Movie includes a number of startling revelations that indicate that some of what we see may be fiction. Beyond the realms of the patently fictitious mockumentary, Weisman's ultra low budget film is a triumph of content over form. Her buddies are her crew (most of them picking up a camera for the first time), whatever happens in the day is her plot and a series of disasters provide the climax. Needless to say, this is amusing viewing until the end.

As we become familiar with the personalities of the four travellers, / Love My Movie becomes something more than a home movie: a gossipy real life soap opera that you cannot turn away from. Will Jill actually consume enough fruit cocktails at a New Orleans casino to get up on stage and bare all? Did Hilary sleep with the redneck cowpoke she picked up at the dingy nightclub while drunkenly dancing to Guns 'n' Roses? How bad will their hangovers be and how acute their embarrassment?

Hilarity, tragedy, stupidity and every emotion under the sun are packed into an hysterical week-long trip. Four neurotic personalities crammed into a rented car, money and patience running out.
