Shopkeeping

Director Avie Luthra / 1998 / USA

A man tries to protect himself from a protection racket until a furtive romance throws his morals into question. Shopkeeping manages to be touching, suspenseful and emotionally powerful without resorting to dramatics or overt manipulation. The style is suitably stripped back and the storytelling so economical, performances so understated, that the film is filled with unspoken love and imminent violence.
