POETRY

Director Lee Chang-dong / 2010 / South Korea

Winner of the Best Screenplay prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Filmmaker Lee Chang-dong (Secret Sunshine, MIFF 08; Oasis, MIFF 03) continues his tradition of razor-sharp social critique with his latest feature, a quietly haunting and thought-proking meditation on society's quick-fix approach to the deeper problems of Korean culture.

Lee's film is the story of a sixty-something woman in search of the fundamental poetry of her life. Coming to terms with the onset of Alzheimer's, she faces a second dilemma when her teenage grandson, who lives under her care, is accused of assaulting a girl from his junior high school who subsequently committed suicide.

Features a bravura performance from Yoon Jeong-hee as a woman searching for meaning in the face of loss.
