THE STRANGE CASE OF ANGELICA
STRANGE CASE OF ANGELICA, THE
Pure, vintage Oliveira in this tale of a seductive revenant.
Centenarian filmmaker and MIFF mainstay Manoel de Oliveira (Eccentricities of a Blond Hair Girl, MIFF 09 and Christopher Columbus - The Enigma, MIFF 08) continues to explore his favoured theme of frustrated love.
A Jewish photographer (played by Oliveira's real-life grandson, Ricardo Trêpa) receives an urgent call requesting he take the final photograph of a young woman, Angelica, who has died only days after her wedding. The moment he lays eyes on Angelica, he falls in love with her. Through the lens, she appears to come back to life - just for him - and she will haunt him night and day, until exhaustion.
“Love is abstract and it's absolute… it's the anxiety of two beings to become just one.” - filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira
