MY JOY

Director Sergei Loznitsa / 2010 / Germany/Ukraine/Netherlands

“There are echoes of Michael Haneke's work in this rambling, nightmare journey through the dark soul of Russia. - Screen International

In the frozen, dark Russian countryside truck driver Georgy's routine run becomes a journey into an unforgiving world. Brutal local police, mysterious passengers and a teenage prostitute all offer their own picture of the underbelly of a society that offers no escape.

Award-winning documentary filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa (Blockade; Revue, MIFF 08) presents his first narrative feature film, a road movie through the dark side of rural Russia. Based on anecdotes collected by Loznitsa while he was making his documentaries in Eastern Europe, My Joy is a biting parable of contemporary Russian life.

“Shows a violence-filled country corrupted into inhumanity… a devastating critique of Russian society.” - Variety
