FILM SOCIALISME
“We've entered into an era with the digital wherein, for different reasons, humanity will be confronted by problems which will not have the luxury of being expressed.”
Touted as possibly his last film, Film Socialisme sees iconoclastic filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard continue his late-period excavation of contemporary history, politics and media, through his inimitable and urgent style of cinema.
In the year of the 50th anniversary of his innovative masterpiece Breathless, Godard presents what he describes as a “symphony in three movements”. History, war and race all entwine into a film experiment of image, sound and narrative where even the subtitles refuse to give too much away. Mixed montages of style and story spring from the decks of a Mediterranean cruise ship and those aboard it, a country gas station in the throes of regime change and a visit to the Odessa Steps.
