GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH (1990)
GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH
“The movie is smarter, wilder and more unfettered than the original Gremlins.” - New Yorker
The Gremlins go to Manhattan in this brilliantly hyperbolic follow up the 1984 classic, which also offers itself as a Dante's view on sequels: they make no sense.
“Dante is perhaps the first filmmaker since Frank Tashlin to base his style on the free-for-all of animated cartoons,” wrote critic Dave Kehr. And if Disney was a muse for the first film, Gremlins 2 is an unabashed tribute to the anarchic wonders of Warner Brothers cartoons.
Holed up in a shiny, technologically advanced high-rise, this ‘new batch' (as designed by Rick Baker, who took over Chris Walas's original creatures) are badder, uglier and more creatively destructive. A symbol of 90s greed and consumerism, the high tech building soon becomes a towering inferno crawling with ghouls.
