APART TOGETHER

Director Wang Quan An / 2010 / China

“Opens up deep historical wounds and generational traumas created by China's civil war, but does not press on them, exploring instead more universal human dilemmas.” - Hollywood Reporter

Like thousands of Nationalists, Liu retreated to Taiwan when the Communists marched across China in 1949. Forced at the time to leave his pregnant wife Yu'e behind, he now returns forty years later to take her home with him to Taiwan, facing Yu'e - along with her current husband and family - with an impossible predicament.

Part political allegory and part uplifting family drama, Together Apart sees filmmaker Wang Quan'an (Tuya's Marriage, MIFF 2007) tell a joyful, resounding tale that also reflects on historical scars inflicted by the Chinese civil war.

Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.
