PLEASE GIVE

Director Nicole Holofcener / 2010 / USA

Three generations of New York women confront the complexities of everyday life in this existential film from Nicole Holofcener (Lovely & Amazing, Friends with Money).

Kate (Catherine Keener) and Alex (Oliver Platt) are married Manhattanites living comfortably off of their vintage store, from which they sell the furniture spoils of recent estates; as Alex puts it, “we buy from the children of dead people.” But the guilt of picking through the leftovers of the recently departed for profit is too much for Kate, who is quickly becoming obsessed with saving the less fortunate members of society.

Filmmaker Nicole Holofcener brings dry New York wit and razor-sharp observations to this portrait of middle-class malaise. Tapping into the offbeat humour, foibles and uncertainty of three generations of women, Please Give is a film about empathy - and the lack thereof.
