THE HOUSEMAID (1960)

HOUSEMAID, THE (1960)

Director Kim Ki-young / 1960 / South Korea

Director Kim Ki-young is capable of probing deep into the human mind, its desires and impulses, while paying sarcastic attention to the details.” - Cahiers du Cinéma

Long considered a highlight of the Korean cinematic ‘Golden Age', and serving as inspiration for Im Sang-soo's 2010 film of the same title (also showing in this year's program), this is a shocking domestic thriller, a tale of sexual obsession replete with psychological game-playing and dark, hysterical melodrama.

An upstanding family hire a new housemaid (Lee Eun-shim) who, soon revealed as a true femme fatale, initiates a reign of terror, committing unspeakable acts against the denizens of the household.

This screening features a newly restored print from Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation.
