OSLO, 31. AUGUST
“An intimate portrait of the end of the world. – Variety
Anders has almost completed his drug rehabilitation in rural Norway. To aid his recovery, he is permitted to visit Oslo for a day to attend a job interview. Taking advantage of this, he revisits people from his past life and remembers the wasted opportunities of his drug-addled life.
Oslo, 31. August is a darkly humorous, stunningly shot portrayal of regret and depression. Director Joachim Trier (Reprise, MIFF 2007) paints a vastly different picture of gloom than his distant cousin Lars did with Melancholia, opting for an approach of deceptive lightness in the simple and nuanced story and scene construction. Anders Danielson Lie is riveting as the protagonist, effortlessly bringing out the intensity of this emotionally lost yet complex character, and convincingly portraying his existential crisis as something almost physical.
"A wonderful, melancholy character piece that's funny and tender, and as fresh as a breath of Oslo sea air." – Empire
