ALOIS NEBEL

Director Tomá_ Lu_ák / 2011 / Czech Republic

“A bracing experience for those who want animation to be more than 3D superheroics and anthropomorphic animal stories.” - Hollywood Reporter

Alois Nebel is an isolated train dispatcher at a lonely station on the Czechoslovak border in the 80s. His life is quiet, disrupted only by the fog that occasionally rolls in and causes him to hallucinate ghosts from World War II. These horrors trouble him but when he meets a silent stranger, Alois begins a journey toward resolving his nightmares.

Adapted from the best-selling graphic novel trilogy by Jaroslav Rudiš and Jaromír 99, Alois Nebel looms with anxiety and foreboding. Striking black and white rotoscoping make this debut from director Tomas Lunak a thing of beauty from start to finish.

“The immensely stylish black and white animation… mixes influences from American film noir and fifties pulp comics to socialist realism and silhouette puppetry.” - Screen Daily
