RAMPART

Director Oren Moverman / 2011 / USA

“A monumental portrayal of a cop in meltdown.” - Rolling Stone

Officer Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson) is a Vietnam veteran and hardened LA cop, dedicated to upholding his ideals of right and wrong - often by dubious means. When he is caught assaulting a suspect, the fabric of his complex life begins to unravel. Paranoia takes hold and aspects of the past revisit, tearing at the layers of prejudice and machismo that have protected him from the consequences of his behaviour.

Inspired by the shocking police corruption of the Rampart Precinct in the late 90s and co-penned by James Ellroy and director Oren Moverman (The Messenger, MIFF 10), Rampart couples handheld cinematography and explosive performances from Harrelson and the supporting cast (including Steve Buscemi, Anne Heche and a fierce Sigourney Weaver as one of Brown's nemeses), resulting in an intense portrait of a man's refusal to compromise.
