LE GRAND SOIR

Le grand soir

Director Benoît Delépine, Gustave Kervern / 2012 / France/Belgium

Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

Jean-Pierre is a respectable, straitlaced mattress salesman, the polar opposite of his brother, Not, who calls himself “the oldest punk with a dog in France”. When Jean-Pierre's life begins to unravel, Not takes him under his mohawked wing, transforming him into an anti-establishment, machine-raging rebel. As the pair clumsily embrace anarchy, they attempt to spark a cultural revolution against society and conformity.

This comic gem from filmmaking team Gustave de Kerven and Benoît Delépine (Louise-Michel, MIFF 09) uses witty wordplay and physical humour, dark comedy and light farce to illuminate the absurdity and hypocrisy of both conformists and non-conformists alike. Stars Benoît Poelvoorde (A Town Called Panic, MIFF 09; Man Bites Dog) and Albert Dupontel (A Very Long Engagement) make for a brilliant double act in this anarchic crowd pleaser. Also stars French singers Brigitte Fontaine and Areski as the parents.
