MODERN ROMANCE
“You've heard of a no-win situation? Vietnam. This. They're around. I think we're in one of them.”
Comedian and filmmaker Albert Brooks - a comedic precursor to Larry David - directs, co-writes and stars in this 1981 romantic comedy. He plays Robert Cole, a neurotic Hollywood editor in the midst of work on a massive science-fiction epic starring George Kennedy and directed by James L Brooks (both playing themselves).
Robert is in a devoted relationship with bank executive Mary (Kathryn Harrold), but his neuroses keep getting in the way: is she the one, or is there someone else out there for him? As they head towards yet another breakup, Robert must deal with his own insecurities and possessiveness, and figure out what it is he actually wants.
“Extremely funny, ultra-hip and alarmingly insightful.” - Time Out Film Guide
