CALL ME KUCHU
“If we keep hiding, they will say we are not here.” - David Kato
In Uganda, a new bill threatens to introduce the death penalty for homosexuality, and jail terms for anyone who fails to turn in a known homosexual. David Kato - the country's first openly gay man - and his fellow GLBTI (or “kuchu”) activists work against the clock to defeat the legislation while also combating vicious daily persecution. But no one is prepared for the brutal murder that shakes their movement to the core and sends shockwaves around the world.
First-time filmmaking duo Katherine Fairfax Wright and Malika Zouhali-Worrall capture a tragic injustice in a documentary that is equally elucidating as it is moving.
Winner of the Teddy Award at this year's Berlin Film Festival and Best International Feature at Hot Docs 2012.
“An urgent story, intelligently and poignantly rendered, honouring the life and courageous example of an everyday hero while exposing shocking human rights violations. Its message resonates globally and issues a call to action.” - Teddy Jury
