TROPICALIA
A joyous, definitive overview of an effervescent, contradictory and defiant period that changed Brazilian music forever.
Brazil's tropicalia movement broke out in the late 1960s, with its revolutionary sounds going on to influence the likes of Beck, David Byrne, Beastie Boys, Super Furry Animals, El Guincho and more. In Tropicalia, Marcelo Machado (Ginga, MIFF 2005) meticulously constructs a mosaic of the golden age of the tropicalism movement. Filled with extremely rare footage, the film follows legendary tropicalistas including Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa and Tom Zé as their mix of samba, bossa nova and old-school rock 'n' roll challenges the country's inscrutable military dictatorship, fierce criticism from the press and general public ambivalence.
Produced by Academy Award nominee Fernando Meirelles and Michael Winterbottom's Revolution Films, Tropicalia is a psychedelic journey of image and sound through the history of one of the most emblematic cultural movements in Brazil.
