BOY MEETS GIRL

Director Leos Carax / 1984 / France

“Shot in luminous black and white, Boy Meets Girl moves with the youthful, anarchic spirit of Godard's early work, endlessly detouring through surreal comedy, romantic philosophizing, and spontaneous flights of fancy.” - AV Club

The essence of the French nouvelle vague movement comes beautifully distilled and reappropriated through the eyes of 22-year-old Leos Carax in his critically hailed debut feature.

Seen through black & white imagery “as velvety smooth as fudge sauce atop vanilla ice cream” (New York Times), this neo-impressionistic thriller centres on a downtrodden ‘cineaste' (Denis Lavant) who falls in love with a suicidal young woman (Mireille Perrier) upon hearing her voice over an intercom.

Equally acclaimed and criticised for giving priority to style over language (the 80s subgenre dubbed the cinéma du look), Boy Meets Girl is notable for its breathtaking depiction of a nocturnal Paris.

Winner of the Award of Youth at the Cannes Film Festival in 1984.
