WEREWOLF BOY, A
"Writer-director Jo Sung-hee has crafted a highly watchable and affecting, genre-crossing work that emphasizes human emotion and interaction over horror." – Film Journal International
After moving to a farmhouse in the countryside, teenager Suni discovers a bedraggled feral boy her own age living on the property. She is initially repulsed: he can't speak or read, and shows no other signs of civilisation. Overcoming her hesitation, Suni attempts to draw the boy out of the beast – like a pet at first – and they soon develop an affectionate bond. But it becomes apparent that Cheol-su, as she names him, has a mysterious secret and when their blossoming relationship is challenged, his bestial instincts return.
Director Jo Sung-hee won acclaim with his apocalyptic debut End of Animal (MIFF 2011), and here has done a 180º stylistic turn to deliver a tender romantic drama – with elements of comedy, suspense and supernatural mystery – that owes more to Pygmalion and Edward Scissorhands than it does to the Twilight series. With its crowd-pleasing twist on the classic coming-of-age tale, A Werewolf Boy is a smart and charming film for all ages.
"A sweet coming of age story … filled with charm and humour." – Spotlight Toronto
