NINA

Director Elisa Fuksas / 2012 / Italy

"Beautifully shot and winsomely appealing … Nina is an artfully elegant and sweetly playful film." – Screen

It's August and Rome's citizens are deserting the city for cooler climes. Remaining behind in sweltering streets, 20-something Nina is preparing for an exam, and her planned relocation to China. Dog-sitting a depressed pooch for cash, Nina's summer idyll unfolds in the Roman suburbs, among an unusual cast of characters seeming to exist between mirage and reality: a professor of Sinology, a precocious 10-year-old and a handsome cellist.

Making her directorial debut, the daughter of famed Italian architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas uses the Italian capital's modernist and neoclassical buildings as a striking backdrop for her title character's engagingly offbeat and unpredictable adventures. Meanwhile, the alluring Diane Fleri is luminous as Nina, a happily lost soul drifting through a summer that may ultimately help her find her way.
