APOSTLE, The

Director Fernando Cortizo / 2012 / Spain

Spain's first ever stop-motion feature is a haunting journey into Gothic folklore.

Convict Ramón escapes from prison and heads towards a remote village in search of loot that was hidden years earlier. Disguising himself as a pilgrim, he is welcomed into the village. But when discovers that the townsfolk are hiding sinister secrets of their own, Ramón finds soon himself afflicted with a curse far more terrifying than the fate he's just escaped.

Featuring a cast of menacing characters and some genuinely ominous moments, The Apostle is an animation that is definitely not for children. The highly detailed texturing of the models and landscapes makes this northern Spanish town come brilliantly to life, as director Fernando Cortizo creates a work of creeping terror that blends traditional Spanish horror with modern suspense.

"Wonderfully sinister characters and creepy atmospherics." – Variety
