CAPSULE, The
"Tsangari's surrealist-inspired haute couture-clad fantasy The Capsule - about a dominatrix and her female disciples - impresses with the confidence of its vision." - Sight & Sound
Commissioned by art collector Dakis Joannou, Athina Rachel Tsangari (Attenberg, MIFF 2010) created this film and accompanying projection installation as a "capsule" for the DesteFashionCollection 2012. Both projects feature works by young, avant-garde designers who challenge the boundaries of fashion as wearable art, with the film extending these images into a twisted Gothic fairytale inspired by the drawings of Polish artist Aleksandra Waliszewska.
Starring Attenberg and Alps (MIFF 2012) actress Ariane Labed, the Harry Potter series' Clémence Poésy, Aurore Marion from Chantal Akerman's Almayer's Folly (MIFF 2012) and Isolda Dychauk from Alexander Sokurov's Faust, The Capsule is a stunning, experimental work that poses questions around the intersection between cinema, fashion and the fine arts.
