VILLAGE AT THE END OF THE WORLD
"Affectionate, engaging ... a heart-warming saga from the deep-frozen far North" – Hollywood Reporter
Niaqornat in north-western Greenland is as far off the beaten track as you can venture. With only 59 residents remaining, the remote Arctic community struggles daily to remain viable, especially when the local fish factory closes down. As the villagers band together to save the factory, and thus their town, four very different inhabitants – teenage Lars, elderly Annie, mayor and bear-hunter Karl, and sewage collector Ilanngauq – offer a personal picture of life in an extreme environment and the wit and determination necessary to survive it.
In this real-life drama of distance, resistance and resilience, director Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) and husband and cinematographer David Katznelson chronicle a year in Niaqornat, their compilation proving intricate in its focus but universal in its themes. Beautifully shot and genuinely uplifting, Village at the End of the World is a fascinating portrait of lives in transition.
