CONCERNING VIOLENCE
"A ferocious, consistently stimulating work rife with contemporary geopolitical relevance … It's a propulsive, hypnotic experience." – Filmmaker Magazine
In what could be seen as the logical progression from his previous film, The Black Power Mixtape 1967–1975 (MIFF 2011), director Göran Hugo Olsson here offers a potent, striking examination of the African liberation struggles of the 1960s and 1970s.
Based on psychiatrist and revolutionary theorist Frantz Fanon's controversial yet influential masterpiece of anti-colonialism The Wretched of the Earth, Concerning Violence presents an absorbing visual narrative of the psychological effects of oppression, both on the oppressed and on the oppressors. Narrated by singer Lauryn Hill and utilising recently discovered archival material chosen specifically to enhance the power of the text, the film is simultaneously a call to arms for a more humane First World, and a reminder of Fanon's warning that violence will be met with violence.
"A powerful, illuminating and visually arresting documentary … Concerning Violence makes for compulsive and at times disturbing viewing." – Screen
