DOLL & EM

Director Azazel Jacobs / 2013

Emily Mortimer and her real-life best friend Dolly Wells star as fictionalised versions of themselves in this semi-improvised comedy about friendship, fame and filmmaking.

Em is a celebrated British actor working in America on a new film when she gets a call from her BFF Doll, also an actor but less well known. Doll has just broken up with her boyfriend and is distraught, so Em invites her to LA … to be her personal assistant. But when the personal becomes professional, can their lifelong bond survive?

Conceived and created by Mortimer, Wells and director Azazel Jacobs (Terri, MIFF 2011; Momma's Man, MIFF 2008), Doll & Em takes a quizzical view of Hollywood and tempers it with an emotionally – sometimes painfully – honest story about the frailties and intimacies of friendship. Featuring cameos from Susan Sarandon, Chloë Sevigny and John Cusack (also playing themselves), Doll & Em is a subtle, first-rate comedy of manners that gives new meaning to cinéma vérité.

"One of the best new shows of 2014: truthful, funny and poignant." – The Independent
