FANDRY
"An explosive new filmmaking talent ... Fandry is a uniquely effective attack on India's banned but still lingering caste system." – Hollywood Reporter
Teenager Jabya and his family are "untouchables", still the subjects of wholesale discrimination 60 years after the caste system was abolished. For Jabya this is concerning because it means he doesn't have the confidence to talk to Shalu, a higher caste girl he has fallen for. Rebellion seems the only way out, but there are some who don't take kindly to those who would rise above their station.
Winner of the Jury Grand Prize at the Mumbai Film Festival and the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Indian Film 2013, Fandry is the sweet, impassioned feature debut from short filmmaker and poet Nagraj Manjule. A bold new voice in Indian cinema, Manjule offers a warmly involving vision of a country where beauty and chaos both reign, and a man might give his life for a pig's.
"An exceptional feature debut … (with a) sophisticated understanding of nuanced storytelling." – Variety
