FANTAIL

Director Curtis Vowell / 2013

"One of the freshest New Zealand films to come along in years." – New Zealand Herald

Blonde-haired, blue-eyed Tania may look pakeha but she identifies as Maori. Working the lonely night shift at a petrol station, Tania endures the ineptitude of her clumsy boss and the romantic intentions of her daggy regional manager while trying to save money to take her little brother Pi in search of their father. But when Pi falls in with the wrong crowd, things go awry.

Actress Sophie Henderson wrote Fantail as a theatre piece before adapting it for the screen with her husband, first-time director Curtis Vowell (a graduate of the MIFF Accelerator program). Nominated eight times at the NZ Film Awards, Fantail is a hilariously deadpan comedy drama with a strong emotional core.

"Curtis Vowell's direction lends a refreshing lightness to a story that both embraces and critiques New Zealand culture, and what that term actually means." – Lumière Reader
