MACONDO
"A delicately observed slice of immigrant life." – Hollywood Reporter
Ramasan is an 11-year-old Chechen refugee living with his mother and sisters in the Macondo refugee community on the outskirts of Vienna. With his father having been killed in the Russian conflict, Ramasan is the only male in the family and its de facto head.
In a gentle, naturalistic way, Macondo captures daily life from the young boy's point of view: as he observes tradition while assimilating into Viennese culture, translating for his mother during interviews with the authorities and working out how to be a man while being lured into typical schoolboy trouble.
Winner of the Firebird Award in the Hong Kong International Film Festival's Young Cinema Competition, its docu-style, including the use of non-professional actors and real immigrant communities, delivers an authentic and captivating insight into the refugee experience.
"A wonderfully engaging, absorbing coming-of-age/culture clash tale … marked out by an absolutely astonishing performance from its young, effortlessly natural lead." – Indiewire
