THE DIRTIES

Director Matt Johnson / 2013

"One of the most important films of the year." – Kevin Smith

Quintessential movie-geek outcasts Matt (director, producer and editor Matt Johnson) and Owen (his pal Owen Williams) are hardly too cool for school. Their alienation and angst is channelled into a film-class project: a prank-fuelled, Tarantino-inspired revenge fantasy that cathartically punishes their tormentors, dubbed "The Dirties". When the taunting only increases, Matt's cinephilia runs rampant as he takes matters into his own hands.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for best narrative feature at the 2013 Slamdance Film Festival, this movie-within-a-movie and mockumentary hybrid both works with and subverts the conventions of the found footage genre as it ponders the most terrible of bullying outcomes: the school shooting.

"Remarkable as much for its insights as for its audacity, The Dirties approaches school violence with a comic veneer that slowly shades into deep darkness." – New York Times
