THANK YOU FOR PLAYING

Director David Osit,Malika Zouhali-Worrall / 2015 / USA

"Powerful and fascinating … a remarkable window into universal challenges through a distinctly 21st century filter." – Indiewire

When video game designer Ryan Green learns that his one-year-old son Joel has terminal cancer, he decides to create a game that can express the difficulties and complexities of, as he says, "raising a child that's supposed to die". A fantastical composite of their journey that uses photos, videos, audio and animation to fold the player into the Green family's encounter with their own tragedy, That Dragon, Cancer is an entirely new kind of game that offers an emotional, poetic playing experience.

Likewise, Thank You for Playing is less about mourning than it is a tender, compassionate portrait of a family in crisis and the ways in which we process and catalogue grief in an age of almost infinite technological possibility. Shooting over the four years of Joel's treatment, and with remarkably intimate access to the Ryan clan, filmmakers Malika Zouhali-Worrall (a co-director and producer on Call Me Kuchu, MIFF 2012) and David Osit have crafted a hopeful, tear-jerking tribute to the redemptive power of love, art and creativity.

"An intelligent, brave and authentic meditation on grief and the artistic process." – The Upcoming
