MIFF TRAVELLING FILM FESTIVAL - LONG WAY NORTH (MANSFIELD)
"Beautifully told … visually stunning … a story that leaves a palpable impression." – Screen Daily
There are many expectations put upon Sasha, a 15-year-old aristocrat living in the Russian court towards to the end of the 19th century; travelling to the Arctic to find her missing grandfather is not one of them. While everybody else has long since assumed Sasha's grandfather died while attempting to find the North Pole, Sasha decides to take action and embarks on a high seas adventure to find him – and the Davia, the unsinkable ship he captains.
Winner of the 2016 Tokyo Anime Award Festival Grand Prize and the Annecy International Animation Festival Audience Award, Long Way North is a stirring animated adventure from first-time director Rémi Chayé (animator on Le Tableau, MIFF 2012; The Secret of Kells, MIFF 2009). Fast paced and strikingly beautiful, Chayé's film is a tale of courage and endeavour that introduces Sasha as an inspiring new hero of animated cinema: a fierce, indomitable young woman who refuses to take the slings of the world lying down.
