THE ISLAND FUNERAL
"Mixes road-movie and mystery-thriller elements with the scent of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness … a quietly gripping tale." – Variety
A young Muslim woman, her brother and his friend take a road trip through Thailand's south to visit a long-lost relative. Accustomed to the comforts of city life, they soon find themselves lost in an unfamiliar landscape, their route punctuated by military patrols and glimpsed apparitions. As tensions between the group surface, a stranger offers to guide them to their destination: a place more beautiful than any of them could have imagined.
The first fictional feature by Pimpaka Towira – one of Southeast Asia's foremost female directors – in over a decade, The Island Funeral is a powerful portrait of a country riven by religious and partisan conflict.
Winner of the Asian Future Best Film Award at the 2015 Tokyo Film Festival.
"Incorporates and reinvents generic tropes from road movies, paranormal thrillers and documentaries … an atmospheric, intriguing piece." – Hollywood Reporter
