THE MOLE SONG - HONG KONG CAPRICCIO

Director Takashi Miike / 2016 / Japan

Cult director Takashi Miike returns with the further adventures of undercover Agent Reiji!

Reiji is Japan's most incompetent police cadet, tasked with going undercover to infiltrate the nation's biggest yakuza clan. His dorkiness has endeared him to his criminal bosses, and he is welcomed into the mob so keenly that the police suspect he may have been turned. But Reiji still believes in justice, even if his out-of-control libido and bumbling incompetence land him in endless trouble. As the yakuza fights against encroaching Chinese gangs, Reiji must do everything in his power to protect his boss's bratty daughter and avoid being killed by his own gang, the enemy gang, and a police force all fighting for control of the streets.

Takashi Miike follows up MIFF 2014's The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji with another instalment of the least likely undercover operative ever. Adapted from Takahashi Noboru's hit manga series, the film is filled with characteristically ambitious set pieces, inconvenient seductions and unlikely heroes. From the opening scene in which Reiji dangles naked from a helicopter, it's clear this hyperactive, eye-poppingly colourful action comedy is not messing about.

'Whoever can see the outrageous ending coming must be a genius or a lunatic.' – Variety
