DARK RIVER

Director Clio Barnard / 2017 / UK

"A survivor of childhood trauma fights for her inheritance in Clio Barnard’s rich psychological drama … led by Ruth Wilson’s steely and focused performance." – Sight & Sound

When her father dies, itinerant sheep-shearer Alice returns to the family farm to claim the inheritance that she’d always been told was hers. But this is a slap in the face to her estranged brother Joe, who still works and lives on the farm, and as the two make their uneasy reunion, the spectres of memory and the traumas of the past will rise up to consume them.

Bold and brooding, Dark River is the mesmerising new offering from rising star of British cinema Clio Barnard (The Selfish Giant, MIFF 2013). A compelling and discomfiting character study anchored by a breathtaking turn from Golden Globe-winning actress Ruth Wilson (The Affair, Luther), Dark River presents a piercing insight into survivor psychology and the way pain echoes across generations.

"A powerful film with a grinding intensity … Dark River has quite an impact." – Independent (UK)
