OUTRAGE CODA
The bloody, scintillating and, yes, outrageous finale to Takeshi Kitano’s Outrage trilogy delivers on everything you’ve come to expect from Japan’s master of grindhouse noir: hyper-violence, insane double-crosses and mesmerising set pieces.
Having now disposed of all his rivals, the unkillable yakuza Otomo (Takeshi Kitano) has retired to South Korea’s Jeju Island to pursue a comparatively quiet existence under regional boss Chang. But when a slight is made against Chang’s empire by the rival Hanabishi clan, Otomo dispatches himself back to the mainland to pursue revenge in the only way he knows how.
By this point, the work of Takeshi Kitano (Outrage Beyond, MIFF 2012; Outrage, MIFF 2010) needs little introduction. He’s a world-leading purveyor of finely tuned chaos and dizzying violence, and Outrage Coda showcases the man doing what he does best as he brings the tale of Otomo to its brutal end.
"A master director and mass entertainer … his talent for spare-but-impactful visuals and mean-but-funny twists is still intact." – Japan Times
