Accused #2: Walter Max Sisulu

Director Gilles Porte,Nicolas Champeaux / / France

South Africa’s Rivonia Trial resulted in the life sentences handed to Nelson Mandela and nine other ANC activists, including Walter Max Sisulu, but also began the long process of ending Apartheid. This VR experience places you in the courtroom as Sisulu gives his testimony.

Constructed around an extraordinary trove of sound archives recorded during the trial – more than 250 hours of which have recently been restored – Accused #2: Walter Max Sisulu presents Sisulu’s cross-examination in stunning and unique monochrome animation. The film situates you in the courtroom opposite Sisulu and through its striking use of the 360˚ space it positions you to feel what he feels.

From Gilles Porte and Nicolas Champeaux (who also made the feature-length documentary The State Against Mandela and the Others), Accused #2: Walter Max Sisulu is creative, entertaining and emotional – a politically and historically important, and extremely accomplished, VR work.
