Dark Suns
Winner of the FACT Award at CPH:DOX, Dark Suns is an epic investigation into decades of cartel-related violence and murder in Mexico and one of the most ambitious, damning and masterful documentaries of the year.
His film unfolding in chapters, documentarian Julien Elie canvasses the breadth of Mexico speaking to those left behind in the wake of kidnappings and murders perpetrated by the violent cartels whose presence influences every aspect of society. Beginning with a focus on the thousands of cases of missing women that remain unsolved, Elie follows the shockwaves to discover that the violence does not end there, uncovering a pervasive misogynistic culture that infects all it touches– from the streets to the heights of government where corruption and power renders all life expendable.
There are no easy answers or empty platitudes in Dark Suns, but strength is to be found in the faces of those speaking on behalf of the dead and disappeared, risking their own lives, whose stories are often being documented for the first time. This is a monumental work of great gravity and vital importance.
“An artistic and political magnum opus.” – CPH:DOX
